TV Advertising is Bad for Children By Garry Cooper More than 30 years ago, cultural theorist Marshall McLuhan pointed out that we perceive the medias effect on us as poorly as fish perceive the water they swim in. Now, the American Psychological Association (APA) says that wed better start paying more attention to the pervasive effects of advertising on childrens minds. The average American child sees more than 40000 commercials a year, and advertisers spend more than billion annually marketing to them—double the amount of 10 years ago. A growing body of research suggests links between childrens advertising and obesity, parent-child conflicts, violence and aggression, later tobacco and alcohol use, and a brittle self-esteem based on possessions. Advertising to kids is like shooting fish in a barrel, warns Berkeley, California, psychologist Allen Kanner, one of 60 psychologists who began lobbying the APA about their concern about advertising to children five years ago. Several other countries restrict childrens advertising: Greece bans toy advertisements on TV between 7 am and 10 pm; Sweden bans all TV advertising aimed at children under 12; and Denmark, Finland, and Norway dont allow sponsorship of any childrens programs. Canadas Broadcasting Code, which severely restricts childrens advertising, bans ads implying that a product will make a child happier or more popular. The 60 psychologists efforts have paid off. In February, the APAs Task Force on Advertising and …

I may consider becoming a parent using an egg donor. Could the donor be height weight proportionate but her biological child be obese from her parents?
I’ve seen overweight couples with overweight children. Is it a "like" behavior thing?
well, the surrogacy clinic just told me they provide all data, height and weight and medical for the parents of the donor, so those records should prevent traits that might skip generations.

why do so many parents give young children so much soda and sweets to eat? My own friend thinks that I’m horrible becuase I refuse to feed my kids sweets at all when they are toddlers! Why do people feed 1-3 yr old children sodas, cookies, chips, and other fatty, sugary food? This can’t be good for them, will dehydrate and malnourish them, and predisposes them for obesity later in life!
And I don’t just mean babies and infants. I’m talking about kids of all ages. The reason kids don’t eat healthy is becuase parents didn’t feed them properly to begin with. Children’s horrid eating habits would end if good eating habits where established early on! Right from the get go!

Studies have proven that more that one in every four children that is examined by a health professional is either obese, or possesses a great deal of risk for becoming obese.
What can we do to help the youth at risk? Many people don’t realize that when they remain significantly overweight, they pose risk for more than 10 serious and possibly fatal diseases.
The thing is – we need to be realistic. Fast food restaurants are never going to go away, and parents can only prevent their child for so long. I know of mnay children that were not allowed to consume fast food, but did it every chance they got when their parents were oblivious.
Also, we can’t always force the youth to get away from the TV, go outside and exercise. There are also parents that won’t force their child to do that either. Many parents say that schools need to do this and do that, but they think that the proposal stops at 3pm, and they don’t have to worry about anything. "Since the schools can take care of it." Many parents, especially parents that are also overweight will not force their child to do something "just to be skinny", the thing is, many parents feel as if their child does not need to lose weight because they feel as if they would be catering to society’s ideals.

Today we see that teen or child obesity has increased in the last twenty years, and that this problem is becoming worse, but does anyone really know the different causes. We all know that obesity is caused by doing no physical activity and eating large amounts of food, but my concern is that some teens or children who are not obese are doing the same,so that tells us that obesity is controlled by the environment. So off course that tells us when parents are obese one or two means that the child has a very high percentage of becoming obese or overweight. How can we change the teens or the childs confidence or attitude so that they can be positive and start making a change by losing weight and becoming healthy, not skinny? The future will be very scary if no one will start to make a change in the eating habits. We all know that teens and children are our future and that thats why we must care.So what can teens and children do to change their lifestyle and their eating habits.Thank you for you.
