There is no greater problem facing America’s children than the epidemic of overweight and obesity. The Foundation for Child Development’s Child Well Being Index has concluded that the increase is obesity and overweight among children since 1975 has decreased the overall well being of children by more than 30%. Researchers at the Center for Human Nutrition at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health released a study this summer predicting that unless behaviors change, by 2015, 75% of adults and nearly 24% of children and adolescents in the United States will be overweight or obese. This could result in serious health, family and fiscal consequences for our nation. What is causing this epidemic? What are its implications? What should America do about it?

The number of obese women of child-bearing age is climbing. And research is mounting that shows excess weight in pregnancy has serious consequences for the long-term health of the unborn child and the mother. The Northwestern Comprehensive Center on Obesity is tackling the growing health problem with a unique program for obese pregnant women. A team of health professionals — a physician, dietitian, exercise physiologist and clinical psychologist –will help the women develop better nutrition for optimal weight gain, counsel them on how to increase physical activity and offer psychological counseling to develop strategies for a healthier pregnancy. Each woman will have a program tailored to her individual needs. The new program — Healthy for You, Healthy for 2 — is available to women who plan to give birth at Northwestern Memorial’s Prentice Women’s Hospital. The obesity pregnancy program is a project of Northwestern University, Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation. northwestern.edu/newscenter/stories/2009/03/kushnerpregnacy.html

Be My Friend – www.myspace.com Fast Food Conspiracy, Fat & Hungry, Nutrition by Natalie We feed our pets food which is scientifically engineered for a balanced diet for their health. Out own food isn’t designed for health. Is it designed to keep us eating, fat and hungry? The obesity rate in America has double in just half a decade. Sugar, MSG and low nutrient dense foods keep us hungry and eating and gaining weight. According to Super Size Me, only 7 items on the McDonalds Menu do not contain added sugar. Do we feed out pets better than we feed ourselves.
Part 2 (not anywhere else on YouTube, split due to its length) shows the effects of MSG (E621) on the brain and on the nervous system. Consumption of MSG during the first few years of life causes brain damage due to improper ‘wiring’ of the brain. Trade names of MSG include Ajinomoto, Vetsin and Accent. MSG is ‘hidden’ in many other names, such as yeast extract, hydrolised protein and flavoring. MSG makes your food taste better but it’s NOT safe! The harmful effects of MSG include ADHD, autism, obesity, growth disruptions, learning and behavioral problems, hormonal imbalance, epilepsy, insomnia, damage to the retina, heart problems, cancer, etc. Many problems don’t become obvious until puberty. This is caused by poor functioning of the hormones due to exposure to MSG in the first few years of life. MSG affects circulation, heart, stomach, intestines, eyes, muscles, nerves, respiration, skin, etc. Losing weight is nearly impossible if you consume MSG as it increases appetite! The consumption of MSG, in addition to the consumption of trans fats and artificial sweeteners, is the main cause of the present obesity epidemic. www.naturalnews.com The flavor enhancer monosodium glutamate or MSG is used in thousands of savory food products such as sauces, snacks, flavored potato chips/crisps, soups, meats, fast food and most chinese food. Governmental agencies such as the FDA (US Food & Drug Administration) insist that flavor enhancers are safe. But research showing the ’safety’ of …

“Killer at Large” a new award-winning feature-length documentary explores the startling details of the American obesity epidemic. In the film, when asked what the most pressing issue is in America today, former Surgeon General Richard Carmona responded, “Obesity, because obesity is a terror within. It is destroying our society from within and unless we do something about it, the magnitude of the dilemma will dwarf 9/11 or any other terrorist event that you can point out…” According to the National Institutes of Health, obesity costs taxpayers 7 billion annually and is estimated to kill more than 100000 Americans each year. With many obesity experts declaring, “This may be the first generation of children to have a shorter life expectancy than that of their parents,” Killer at Large provides a sobering perspective on the most pressing health issue of our time and serves as a call to arms for concerned parents, school districts, elected officials, health professionals, and entire communities to empower themselves in reversing this deadly trend. Killer at Large features interviews and footage of numerous public figures discussing both the politics and the causes/effects of obesity including former President Bill Clinton, consumer advocate Ralph Nader, filmmaker Neil LaBute, Senator Tom Harkin, Senator Sam Brownback, Governor Mike Huckabee and a number of bestselling authors such as Michael Pollan, Chef Ann Cooper, and Dr. Brian Wansink among many others.
