About 9million children over the age of 6 are considered overweight in this country. The American obesity epidemic has been passed to our youngest generation. Overweight children are at far greater risk of developing some chronic diseases, and in addition to putting their health at risk, overweight children are often subjected to exclusion by their peers, which can affect their emotional well-being. As part of First Lady Michelle Obamas LetsMove initiative, a couple of complimentary advertising efforts demostrate the importance of eating healthy and being physically active, crucial elements to reversing the trend of childhood obesity.

Kaiser Permanente pediatrician Amy Porter, MD, discusses her study published in the Journal of Pediatrics that used electronic health records to examine 710949 children and found extreme obesity is affecting more children at younger ages, with 7.3 percent of boys, 5.5 percent of girls, 11.2 percent of Hispanic teenage boys and 12 percent of black teenage girls now classified as extremely obese. This is the first study to provide a snapshot of the prevalence of extreme obesity in a contemporary cohort of children ages 2 19 years from a large racially and ethnically diverse population using the recent 2009 US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention extreme obesity definition.
