Is obesity genetic and other questions?

Posted by beeman | Uncategorized | Sunday 23 August 2009 8:36 am

I am sure everyone here knows of the health risks of obesity: heart disease, joint problems, etc.

Just looking for some explanations:
-If obesity is genetic, why are so many more Americans obese today than the previous generation? Shouldn’t the rates be the same if obesity is genetic?

-In this case do you think that obesity would better be controlled by lifestyle changes or by gene therapy? (or surgery)?

-Do you think that obese people will use "genetics" as an excuse to stay at an unhealthy weight because they can’t help it?

According to an estimate, 10 to 50 percent of the overall population of America is threatened by obesity. It can be a result of heredity, physical characteristics, economic status, etc.Crash dietary programs always seem successful initially, as they bring about weight loss in dramatic proportions, but they tend to fail in the long run. At times, the weight lost is returned in multiplied proportions. Treating the root cause of the illness will save us from giving inconvenience to our body later. See that the consumption of sugar is as less on our diet chart as possible.A diet that is rich in refined carbohydrates and fats and that too in exceeding quantities is the prime enemy of a body likely to put on weight. Lack of exercise complements body fat. Some researchers link genetics to be directly involved in this regard. They see extremely overweight people as victims of Prader-Willi Syndrome, caused by a gene, which make them prone to store weight in abnormal proportions. Glandular malfunctioning and even a virus has been linked with various types of obesity. Though it sounds incredible, malnutrion is also reported to be the cause in some studies. It is observed that victims of boredom and people obsessively involved with eating turn out to be fat in most cases.
Yeah lifestyle changes will make it possible to overcome the situation. If somebody spend most of his leisure time chatting on the phone or in front of TV or computer, begin reducing it! Give some time to exercise. Go on an evening walk, for instance. If somebody is too fat, begin with something light and then move on slowly and gradually to hectic exercise. And if someone is able to make it immediately after meals, then he is really going to hit the nail on the head.
