Does Accutane cause hyperlipidemia?

Posted by beeman | Hyperlipidemia | Tuesday 25 August 2009 8:13 am

My total cholesterol went from 150 to 188 in 14 months. I’m 33, healthy–BMI of 21, regular exercise, I almost never eat red meat and my daily cholesterol intake is always less than 50% of the RDA. No family hx of high cholesterol. What might have caused this increase?

Yes, Accutane can cause your cholesterol to go up. After my first month on Accutane, my cholesterol went up 60+ points. I ended up having to go low (practically none at all) cholesterol, low fat for the remaining four months of treatment. (Cholesterol is one of the indicators they test with your monthly Accutane blood test…)

Although it was a significant jump, a 188 is still manageable enough. I believe a 240 is considered high risk. I would recommend talking to your doctor, make sure you mention the Accutane, and see what you can do to get back where you belong.

    Good luck!
